Aloha

Welcome to our new and improved blog. We are so excited for you to have a place to see what is new and exciting at Hawaiian Images. We love blogs and think you will enjoy seeing so many destination weddings and the inside scoop behind them. So sit back, grab a Mai Tai or cup of coffee and enjoy.

OK about the photo of me. This is a rare moment for me to be that dressed up and without a camera in my hand. I had the great privilege of being the FOB (father of the bride) this June for my daughter Sally and her new husband David. What a great name.

Please comment on our posts. I will reply. I can't wait to chat with you. Well just remember. Where ever you are and whatever you are doing, chances are is is about 80 degrees here and the trade winds are lightly blowing your way. We will take you on a virtual tropical vacation with each post and even throw in a few photo tips especially useful for destination weddings.

Day Off Adventure

Well yesterday was election day and the kids were out of school.  I got up at ran to our polling place at 6:30am voted at 7, ran home go the boat ready to take out and off we went.  Whale season is fast approaching and I had not had the boat out for a few weeks and needed to get it up to speed.  I took Lexi and her friend Summer and Zachary and his friend Calib. We did not have any plans and after we took off and because it was so calm we decided to try to make it over to our neighbor Island Lanai.  It took just under an hour and we found a great hidden beach.  It was a blast and we are planning our next trip there.  Here are a few photos and a slide show I did for the girls.  Zach and Calib have a cameo appearance in the show.  Enjoy.  Next up is a great wedding we shot on Lanai at the Four Seasons.  One of our favorite places.  More on that wedding soon.

Portland Wedding

Some where on another I promised to post images from this wedding I did in Portland a few months ago.  I am in catch up mode now and loved a few of these images from Ashley and Kevin’s wedding.  I love flying to destinations to shoot weddings.  The difference is that I get to live on Maui and shoot here daily and then travel to the Mainland to shoot events that most other wedding photographers get to shoot every day and hope to someday be able to go to Maui and shoot a wedding.  I am so in love with what I get to do and to be able to tell stories about special days in peoples lives. I am truly blessed.

Voodoo Donuts?

I am visiting Portland Oregon today and spent the day with my daughter Sally and her Husband Dave.  We went exploring downtown.  I moved to Maui from Portland and it was good to see downtown again and all of my old stomping grounds.  The University of Oregon ( Sally and I are alums) opened a new downtown Portland campus.  There is a Digital Arts department there.  I would love to go and be a guest digital photo teacher there sometime.  We went to the Saturday market, to Urban Outfitters (Lucky Lexi) and best of all to Voodoo Donuts.  It is a hole in the wall in the heart of old Portland.  There was about a 20 people line out the door and they have some of the weirdest donuts I have ever seen. Being a donut fan it was a blast.  If you are ever on Portland give it a try.  I am home on Monday then off to San Francisco on Tuesday to shoot a bar mitzvah.  My first one.  I am very excited about that.  As soon as I get back I will have more wedding photos to post.  We have shot some  very cool weddings lately and want to share them with you.

Camping on Maui

One of the most special things about living on Maui is that when you have some time off you have some of the most amazing places on earth to go to. People save up a life time to come here and see some of these places and we can enjoy them on a regular basis. One of our favorite things to do is to go camping at Ohe’o Pools about 10 miles past Hana. It is also sometimes know as the Seven Pools. It is a beautiful drive and Zach, my 9 year old son, and I had a “boys go camping” overnighter. It was a blast and a time off so appreciated. Family is what we do this for and times like this are why it is all worth it. Here are a few shots of our trip.

This beautiful waterfall is a 2 mile hike from the campground. The day before there was almost no water going over the falls. It rained all night and it was flowing with lots of water when we got there.

The bamboo forest is to thick it blocks most of the light.

I want to shoot a bride in her wedding dress on these staris so bad.
I love how the bamboo forest looks from above
This shot was taken with my new 10mm lens. This lens rounds out my collection. I think I am going to like it a lot.
This was taken at Keani. It is the 1/2 way point on the drive to Hana. Another shot with my 10-17mm lens.
This is Zachs favorite shot. Still playing with the 10mm fisheye.
This cave is at the black sand beach near Hana. We went in the Lave Tubes in Hana also and could not seem to get enough of the caves.

Nick’s Fish Market

Part of what this blog is about is to bring you some local insight on places I love.  One of my favorite restaurants in the world is Nick’s Fishmarket that is found in the Fairmont Kea Lani resort found in Wailea on Maui.  We live just down the road and I take my wife Steph there often after shooting a beach wedding.  It is a bit on the expensive side but we go sit at the bar and enjoy the beautiful tropical atmosphere and order some of the best appetizers in the world.  Here is our usual.  Calamari is a must.  Theirs is the best I have ever had. Kalua Pig Pot Stickers are also very good.  Top it off with one of their Greek Maui Wowie Salads and you are good to go.  Steph like a nice glass of wine while I enjoy their Mango Daiquiri’s.  My favorite drink in the world. After that all settles have one of their signature desserts.  Just ask for the strawberry’s on fire dessert.  It is an experience all on its own.  by the way the iPhone takes great photos.  Here is one of the Strawberry Dessert I shot last week.
